    The Zen Diary
2022 | 111 mins | Dir.: NAKAE Yuji | Cast: SAWADA Kenji, MATSU Takako | In Japanese with English subtitles | Blu-ray

2022 San Sebastian International Film Festival, Culinary Zinema

Nakae Yuji, director of Nabbie's Love, adapted the worldview of author Mizukami Tsutomu's 1978 cooking essay into a screenplay. The film depicts the true richness of the writer's life through the "Twelve Months" that he spends appreciating the blessings of the four seasons.

Tsutomu (Sawada Kenji), a writer, lives in a mountain villa in Shinshu with the remains of his late wife, Yaeko. Having learned vegetarian cooking at a Zen temple as a child, Tsutomu cooks with seasonal vegetables and looks forward to meals with Machiko (Matsu Takako), his editor and girlfriend, who comes to visit from Tokyo.

Sharing: Washoku, Nature and Seasons (Guest Speaker: Kanatin)

We are pleased to have invited Kanatin, a Japanese residing in Hong Kong, to share her experience of living in Lam Tsuen. How does she adjust her washoku menu throughout the seasons? The sharing will be conducted in Cantonese.

    Kanatin
Originally from Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, Kanatin has lived in Hong Kong for more than five years. On one occasion Kanatin passed by Lam Tsuen, and was attracted by the surrounding nature. Living in Lam Tsuen allowed Kanatin to discover local Hong Kong vegetables. She is now passionate about cooking developing Japanese cuisine with fresh ingredients delivered directly from the farm. She holds regular workshops to share her food and encourage Hong Kongers to buy Hong Kong vegetables.
