Set in Nara, this film is about widower Mr Asai (Ryu Chishu) and his three daughters, Chizuru (Yamane Hisako), Ayako (Sugi Yoko), Setsuko (Kitahara Mie), living a peaceful life. However, since they met Amamiya (Mishima Ko), a friend introduced by Chizuru's late husband's brother, their relationships and emotions begin to stir.

Ozu Yasujiro and Saito Ryosuke co-write the script. Ozu's team, including actor Ryu Chishu, also joined the crew. This is the second directorial work of Tanaka Kinuyo. It has reinterpreted the image of women that male directors have always portrayed. Tanaka has injected a female perspective into the characters which differs from the inherent style of the "Ozu system". In addition, combining Kimura Takeo's exquisite aesthetic and Mine Shigeyoshi's calm and concise cinematography, this film is made in a thoughtful, subtle and even timeless way.
