At the end of World War II, soldier Reikichi (Mori Masayuki) survived. When he set foot on his motherland again, the only thing he remembered was his first love, Michiko (Kuga Yoshiko), whom he had always loved deeply. Reikichi goes to Tokyo and stays with his book dealer brother. With the help of his friends, he found a job writing English love letters for "bad women". Reikichi finally meets Michiko on an occasion. Unfortunately, the goddess in his heart also sells her body for money which makes him very disappointed and even angry.
Love Letter, the first film directed by Tanaka Kinuyo, contains profound reflections and criticisms on what chastity and betrayal are. Adapted from Niwa Fumio's novel, Kinoshita Keisuke reflects on the narrow side of national dignity. The long shot of Michiko turning around and leaving alone when she’s faced with Reikichi's ruthless moral condemnation fully demonstrates Tanaka's keen and flexible directorial skills.
