Set in the Tensho period in the 16th century, the expansion of power and religious conflicts caused feudal lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi to suppress foreign beliefs. Gin (Arima Ineko), the stepdaughter of tea ceremony master Sen no Rikyū, falls in love with Ukon (Nakadai Tatsuya), a married military commander with Christian faith. Through their relationship, the story accurately depicts the suppression of humanity and faith by political and religious power. Although being in troubled times, women hold onto their beliefs with resilience and persistence.
Written by screenwriter Narusawa Masashige, who studied under Mizoguchi Kenji, Love under The Crucifix is adapted from the novel by Kon Toko. Cinematographer Miyajima Yoshio, known as the king of cinematography, dedicates his excellent skills together with his frank personality. With the contributions from a great team, the artistic expression in the last title of Tanaka is exquisite and wonderful. The theme of fighting for women's independence is still strong and has never faded.
