Although the "Prostitution Prevention Act" was passed in 1958, many women in the sex trade still smartly slipped through the loopholes of the law to trade. If a sex worker is arrested in a raid by the police, she will be forcibly sent to reformatory for rehabilitation. There are many such women living in the Shiragiku Protective Facility, including Kuniko who longs to regain her freedom and be able to live her own life. With the right guidance, she re-joined society and found a job through an employment agency. However, the process of rehabilitation is filled with discrimination and contempt. The lack of social acceptance is not only from men, but also from women.
This is the fifth feature of Tanaka Kinuyo, who starred in Mizoguchi Kenji's masterpiece, Women of the Night (1948). Her approach in portraying women from a female perspective is in a provocative fashion and shapes a new image of women who live for themselves.
