Fumiko (Tsukioka Yumeji)'s husband has failed in his career. Not only does he live an indulgent life, he is an alcoholic and has a mistress, which exhausts Fumiko physically and mentally. Now that she is discouraged and desperate, she has no choice but to end the unhappy marriage and start again.
After completing the divorce procedures, Fumiko is forced to separate from her eldest son and live with her daughter. She knows that although the days ahead will be difficult, she gets through it by writing poems and from the support of her friends. Unfortunately, just when her talent is appreciated and she has the opportunity to shine in the literary world, she is diagnosed with breast cancer and needs an immediate operation. A struggle between the meaning of existence, willpower, spirit and desire then begins.
The story is based on the life of Nakajo Fumiko, a poetess who died at the age of thirty-one. Eternal Breasts is acclaimed as the most accomplished work in Tanaka's career. Combined with Tanaka Sumie's delicate script and Fujioka Kumenobu's expressive cinematography, the film has become a woman’s film classic.
